Household appliances routinely disappeared into the family garage only to return fully reassembled, often operating better than before. His parents encouraged experimentation, provided it was accompanied by careful study. By the time he reached secondary school, John had already designed functioning gravitic lift prototypes and modified antique combustion engines simply to understand how humanity had once solved engineering challenges without replicators or computer-assisted fabrication. While many of his classmates dreamed of becoming starship captains, Reynolds became fascinated with the machinery that made exploration possible. Warp engines, power distribution systems, structural integrity fields, and matter/antimatter reactions captivated him more than the captain's chair ever could. He entered Starfleet Academy in 2359 determined to become one of Starfleet's finest engineers. John excelled almost immediately.
